Italian ceramic in architecture: exteriors

Exterior wall coverings have had an important role in contemporary architecture, ceramic traditionally being one of the most widely used materials for this purpose. More than any other material, it offers superlative aesthetic results and outstanding design solutions while assuring durability and ease of installation, maintenance and cleaning.
In Italy, home of the world’s largest and most prestigious ceramic tile manufacturers, the internationally-famous architect Renzo Piano has designed a ventilated terracotta wall covering for the brand new headquarters of the Banca Popolare di Lodi. In another application, clinker was chosen for the façade of a residential complex in Milan. Tiles in a 30x60 cm size, fixed using special adhesives, provide a sober façade covering for the company Le Torri in Modena. Porcelain tile has likewise been successfully used in numerous applications. Public buildings are embellished by exterior ceramic wall coverings. One such example is the ventilated façade of the school in the Val di Non. These are just a few of the possible exterior applications with ceramic tiles, applications that embrace urban design, exterior ventilated walls, terraces, balconies, courtyards and the floor coverings on interior walkways.
At the San Rocco clinic in Brescia ceramic tiles were used as both the interior and exterior floor covering, including the ornamental fountain placed at the entrance.
