Assopiastrelle and the Italian Trade Commission are pleased to announce the winners of the Ceramic Tiles of Italy Design Competition 2005. This year, with competition very intense in each of the three categories, one firm in Arizona was able to take two of the category prizes. Michael P. Johnson, of the MPJ Design Studio, Cave Creek, Arizona was awarded the prize in the commercial category for his stunning renovation of the Wilkinson Office Building in downtown Phoenix. The firm also won the residential category award for their elegant renovation of a modest mid-century home for a local female firefighter. TMP Associates of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan won in the institutional category for the whimsical and colorful Anchor Bay High School. An Honorable Mention in the commercial category went to Cooper Carry Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia for their dynamic installation of Italian tiles in a large shopping mall complex.
The Design Competition was started 12 years ago, to recognize outstanding achievement by North American architects or interior designers using Italian ceramic tile in commercial, institutional or residential installations. The criteria used by the jury included: Overall Design of the Project, Innovative Use of Tile, Tile Design, Quality of Installation and Degree that Tile Enhanced the Setting.
