The safety of the user is an important factor to consider. With regards to the prevention of risks, both in normal use and under emergency conditions, tiles are an excellent choice compared to other materials. The nature of ceramic products prevents any type of transfer of polluting substances, reducing the risk of environmental pollution and at the same time guaranteeing hygienic conditions in a simple and effective way. Thanks to the surface structure, together with careful design and correct laying, the risks of injury from slipping or tripping are notably reduced. Moreover, it must be remembered that some types of finishing materials cause the accumulation of static electricity on the surface, provoking electric shocks, and therefore the discomfort of users. In contrast, ceramic tiles do not cause such problems. Also with respect to their behaviour in a fire, ceramic tiles respond in quite a different way with respect to other products; they are inert, and do not suffer damage on contact with flames, and are therefore among the safest of materials. There is another important aspect which should be born in mind when choosing floor and wall covering materials: in the event of fire, ceramic tiles have been shown to have a remarkable capacity to protect the structures to which they are applied, thus reducing the risk of collapse.
